What is Home Roots Market?

My name is Diego Barragan, and I started Home Roots Market here in Minnesota because I believe healthy food should be accessible to the people who live here—not treated like a luxury or a trend.

Minnesota has a strong sense of community. People help their neighbors, show up when it matters, and take pride in where they live. But even here, access to healthy, affordable food has become harder than it should be. Too often, good food is expensive, overly processed, or shipped in from far away, while local production continues to disappear.

That disconnect is something I’ve experienced personally, and it’s what pushed me to start Home Roots Market.

A Local Response to a Shared Struggle

Like many Minnesotans, I’ve struggled with the cost and availability of healthy food. Wanting to eat better, but feeling boxed in by prices, time, and limited options, is a frustration I know well. It shouldn’t be this hard to feed yourself or your family well—especially in a state with such a strong agricultural history.

Home Roots Market exists to help bring food production back closer to home. We grow produce locally and deliver it directly to people in our community. That means fewer layers, fewer markups, and more care put into how food is grown and handled.

Keeping food local isn’t just about freshness—it’s about supporting local work, local knowledge, and local resilience.

Why Community Matters

Minnesota communities thrive when people are connected—to each other and to the systems that support them. Food is one of the most important of those systems. When it’s controlled by distant corporations, communities lose more than choice—they lose stability and trust.

I believe strong, self-reliant communities start with local production. When food is grown nearby and sold directly, it keeps dollars circulating locally and builds relationships instead of dependence. That’s the kind of system I want to help rebuild, starting right here.

Built Small, With Intention

Home Roots Market is intentionally small. We grow on a modest scale, handle each order with care, and think carefully about every step of the process. This isn’t about growing fast—it’s about growing right.

The long-term vision is to work with other local growers and producers who share these values, creating a network where Minnesotans can source more of their food directly from people they trust. Step by step, that’s how real change happens.

Looking Ahead, Together

This business was built with Minnesota in mind—with the people, the seasons, and the communities that make this place what it is. I want Home Roots Market to be something neighbors feel proud to support, knowing it’s rooted in care, honesty, and a genuine desire to see people healthier and better supported.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated by the cost of eating well, disconnected from where your food comes from, or simply wanted a better option close to home—you’re not alone. This is my way of contributing to a solution, and I’m grateful to everyone who’s part of it.
